As an international student, I can attest to the value of travel education in shaping one’s understanding of the world. Growing up in Uganda, a different country with a unique culture, I have always been fascinated by the idea of understanding my position in this world not just in Uganda and East Africa but on a global level and the key to this was exploring different parts of the world, in particular – Canada. When the opportunity to embark on my own travel adventures as a university student arose, I quickly realized just how much there was to learn and discover beyond my own borders.
Cultural Understanding
One of the most significant benefits I have seen of travel education as an international student is the opportunity to learn about new ways to approach life. When I first arrived in Canada, I was struck by the differences in everyday life and customs compared to my home country. There was a deep respect for processes and systems, an honest appreciation for diversity, and a striking level of kindness I was not particularly used to.
In my one year of traveling to different parts of the country and meeting people from diverse backgrounds and belief systems, I was able to gain a more nuanced understanding of Canadian culture and how it varies from region to region in a way that mirrors the cultures and tribes across the North, West, East and Central parts of Uganda.
Personal Growth
As an international student, navigating a new country and education system can be challenging especially in the early stages, but with an intent to learn and the capacity to travel, I have learned to be more independent, adaptable, and resourceful because there’s only so much you can do in a new environment. I have had to figure out how to navigate public transportation systems, communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds, and manage my time and finances effectively.

All in the name of travel education, the different experiences we go through, teach us and shape the way we approach situations and on a personal level, they have helped me become a more capable individual, both personally and academically.
Career Success
The goal at the end of the day for me is to complete my degree, but beyond that, travel education has also broadened my career prospects. By working in diverse environments and with different groups of people, I have gained skills that are highly sought after by employers in today’s global job market, and it all began with my first co-op in Canada, the full story – My first co-op in Canada. Additionally, travel education has given me the opportunity to network with people from around the world, which has opened new career opportunities and expanded my professional horizons.
The experiences that I have attained from travel education have been incredibly valuable for me. It has given me the opportunity to learn about different cultures, develop important life skills, and broaden my career prospects. It is a journey that is not the same for everyone, but if you have the means to, I encourage everyone and anyone to take advantage of travel opportunities whenever possible, as it can truly enrich your life in countless ways.
