The key to seizing opportunities? Being ready when they arrive. That’s exactly how I found myself as a youth speaker at Bloomberg CityLab 2024, in Mexico City. Through an unexpected series of events, I received this unique opportunity, backed by incredible support from the City of Kitchener, Bloomberg Philanthropies and Young Eye Initiative.
Nomination and Selection: How It All Started
As one of the winners of the Youth Climate Action Fund for our work with Young and Restless and Young Eye International, I was thrilled to represent the Young Eye Initiative on this stage. Nominated by the City of Kitchener, I was interviewed and ultimately selected by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Out of many applicants, only three youth speakers were chosen to participate in the 11th Bloomberg CityLab event. The experience was a chance to amplify the voices of young leaders globally, right from the heart of Mexico City with numerous city leaders, innovators and change makers.
Diving into CityLab: Meeting the Best Minds in Urban Innovation
Attending Bloomberg CityLab 2024 was more than a speaking engagement; it was a learning adventure. Leaders from across the world, including influential mayors, innovators, and changemakers, gathered to explore the challenges and solutions shaping urban life today.
One highlight? Hearing insights from inspiring figures like Patti Harris, CEO of Bloomberg Philanthropies; Eyal Feder-Levy, urban innovator; and Dan Porterfield, CEO of Aspen Institute and advocate for social change. Listening to each of them and many other influential speakers added depth to my understanding of the impact cities can have on the climate crisis, community resilience, and young people’s roles in urban development.
As I moved through the vibrant discussions, I saw how these leaders are crafting a world where cities prioritize sustainability, inclusivity and the youth perspective. It was a privilege to hear firsthand from the people influencing change on this scale.
Panel Discussions with Inspiring Youth
One of the most rewarding experiences at CityLab was participating in a panel discussion with two inspiring young leaders, Maddie Davidson and Jessica Lima. Each of us brought unique perspectives on sustainability, corporate responsibility, and the role of youth in these areas. Maddie and Jessica shaped how I think about many aspects of the corporate and environmental world and it was great to tour parts of Mexico, try the food and the culture with my peers.
As we went through our panel, we stressed an essential theme: the need to create and support more young leaders globally. We spoke not only for ourselves but also for the greater 100 youth climate action fund winners worldwide. By representing their voices, we highlighted the importance of constructive collaboration between city leaders and young people. Ensuring that the point – we can design sustainable solutions that truly work for everyone was emphasized.
Our focus during CityLab was on recognition, collaboration, and sustainability. We took this chance to celebrate the Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF) winners who are sparking positive change in communities across the globe. By recognizing these young voices, CityLab emphasized the potential of youth-led initiatives.
Exploring Mexico City
Mexico City, with its rich history, colorful streets, and welcoming people, was a treat to explore. Beyond the CityLab sessions, every part of Mexico City seemed to have something to teach about resilience and community. From vibrant markets to historical sites, the city gave me a deeper appreciation for the culture and diversity of this incredible place.
During my time in Mexico, we explored Xochimilco’s renowned Floating Gardens in Mexico City. These “chinampas,” created by the Aztecs, showcase an ingenious ecological design: fertile, man-made islands surrounded by canals that span 120 square miles across 400 acres. Once farmland, they now house diverse wildlife, including 15-20% of Mexico’s bird species, making Xochimilco a vibrant agricultural and ecological site. Paddling through these tranquil waters was both invigorating and scenic. Despite shallow waters averaging around five feet, no life jackets were required, adding to the experience of Mexico City’s iconic ecological beauty.
