How We Won Funding for the Young Eye Initiative

Young Eye Initiative win funding

Earlier last month the Young Eye Initiative secured crucial funding for two of its organizations: the Young Eye International podcast and Young and Restless. With all the work both organizations have been involved in over the past years and year respectively, both will now be able to continue on their missions to inspire and empower young people, thanks to support from the Youth Climate Action Fund. This fund, backed by Bloomberg Philanthropies – the first time they are doing this – giving 100 cities $50,000 each to fund youth-led climate focused initiatives. The City of Kitchener received this funding and we were grateful to receive part of the funding.  Out of 16 projects selected for funding, the Young Eye Initiative was awarded two grants, underscoring the unique value our efforts bring to the table.

What This Funding Means for Us

This opportunity allows us to accelerate both the Young Eye International podcast and Young and Restless initiatives. Each project will be running its own distinct activities under the umbrella of climate action and youth empowerment:

  1. Young Eye International Podcast will use this funding to expand its platform, creating episodes that highlight young changemakers in Kitchener, Waterloo. With a focus on sharing insights, we will aim to share personal journeys, successes, and challenges of young and experienced leaders tackling climate change. These specific episodes will feature thought-provoking interviews aimed at educating and inspiring action among youth.
  2. Young and Restless will leverage its share of the funding to host an event soon, where young people can collaborate on climate solutions. Without saying too much, we are organizing a hackathon that will empower young innovators to ideate, collaborate, and build sustainable business models.

Bloomberg Philanthropies and the City of Kitchener

Securing the Youth Climate Action Fund was no small feat, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the significant support of GreenHouse and the City of Kitchener. GreenHouse’s efforts are well-known for championing youth led initiatives and solutions, while the City of Kitchener’s dedication to youth engagement and sustainability is evident in this partnership.

The Youth Climate Action Fund is designed to empower young innovators who are actively seeking climate solutions. A total of 16 projects were selected to share the $50,000, and we are humbled to have received funding for both the podcast and Young and Restless. This is a testament to the work we’ve been doing over the years, as well as our commitment to engaging youth in climate action.

The Team Behind the Success

While it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the award, it’s important to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the incredible teams that made this possible. From the moment we began drafting the application to the final submission, both the Young Eye International and Young & Restless teams team pulled together to present our vision and strategies in the best possible light.

A special thank you goes out to our partners at GreenHouse and Erin Hogan. Their guidance and mentorship throughout the application process were invaluable. They helped us refine our proposals multiple times over June and July this year, making sure we highlighted the unique potential of both the Young Eye International podcast and Young and Restless. Their continued support and belief in our work gave us the confidence we needed to push through the rigorous application process.

Lastly, a huge thank you to the Young Eye Initiative team who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. From brainstorming sessions to compiling data, every member of the team contributed to this success. This win is as much theirs as it is for the projects themselves.

What’s Next?

With the funding now secured, we have already hit the ground running with intense planning and strategic external partnerships being forged. All I would say is stay tuned for updates on our upcoming events, podcast episodes, and new initiatives. We’ll be reaching out to different groups, universities, and local organizations to work together on these pressing issues. Whether you’re a student, teacher, or climate advocate, there will be numerous ways for you to get involved.

Tips for Securing Funding for Your Own Projects

Question is though – how can you secure your own funding for different projects? For those of you looking to apply for grants, here are some tips based on our experience:

  1. Clearly define your mission – Funders want to understand what your project is aiming to achieve. Make sure your goals are clear and aligned with the funding priorities.
  2. Tell a compelling story – Whether it’s through a video, or narrative, ensure your application stands out by explaining why your project matters. Highlight the real-world impact of your initiative.
  3. Build partnerships – As seen in our case with GreenHouse, partnerships with established organizations can help strengthen your proposal. Partnering with credible mentors or advisors can give you the guidance and extra push you need.
  4. Pay attention to the details – Double-check every aspect of your application and that it aligns with the grant givers values. Make sure your budget is realistic, your timeline is clear, and your project scope is well thought out.
  5. Follow up – After submitting your application, don’t be afraid to follow up with the funding body. This shows your dedication and keeps your project on their radar.
