Bringing your vision to life is one thing, but staying committed to it despite all the challenges that come with it is an entirely different ball game. There are often a barrage of external factors that challenge our desire to achieve any goal – that’s just the way of life. In my opinion, I view this as a test of our resolve and true desire for what you have set out to achieve. Whether it’s a startup idea, an innovative project, or a personal goal, the path is quite often rarely linear. It’s strewn with doubts, naysayers, and obstacles. However, as many of you have to understand, the history of breakthroughs and success stories is filled with people who displayed an “insane belief in their work” – a level of madness.
How do I exercise my madness with caution? This is what I do to keep an unwavering belief in what I do and persevere against all odds.
-
Understanding Your ‘Why’
The cornerstone of unwavering belief is understanding your ‘why’. Simon Sinek, the author of start with ‘why’ mentioned that this is your core motivation, the purpose that lights a fire in you. It’s essential to delve deep and anchor your work to this ‘why’. When we begin to face different challenges, reminding yourself of the reason behind your work gives you the resilience to push through. This is only because you have a defined clarity of what your vision is.

Surround Yourself With Believers
We are a product of the environment we are in and the people we surround ourselves with. The environment you place yourself in has a immense impact on your mindset. Surrounding yourself with people who believe in the potential of your ideas and encourage you to pursue them is crucial. These believers aren’t just cheerleaders; they’re mentors, peers, and collaborators who challenge you constructively and support your growth. Build relationships with people who provide honest feedback, share valuable insights, and offer moral support. I explored this in my blog 6 reasons why you need a mentor and beyond that understanding how to build an effective team.

Stay Focused
In a world filled with distractions and new trends popping up every day, maintaining focus on your long-term vision can be challenging but you have to in-order to get to where you want to be. In order to do this, the simple approach is to set clear and achievable goals that align with your ultimate vision. Break these down into actionable steps. One of the ways I learnt how to do so is to have monthly goals that you write out and then day-to-day actionables that work towards achieving the monthly goals.

Guard Your Mental Space
There will always be those that will never accept the journey you’re in or understand why you are doing what you are doing until you start to reap the benefits from your hard-work. Even when you do some will not. In the pursuit of your goals, protecting your mental space from negativity and doubt is imperative. Be mindful of the media you consume, the conversations you engage in, and the thoughts you entertain. Cultivating a positive mental space usually does enhance resilience and keeps the flame of belief burning bright despite everything else happening around you..
-
Stay Persistent
We all believe that persistence is about doggedly sticking to a plan. I have learnt that sometimes it is about intelligently navigating the path to your goal, ready to pivot and adapt as necessary. It requires a balance of stubbornness (see that madness), in your belief and flexibility in your approach. Every notable invention or company we admire today once seemed like a far-fetched idea to many when you read stories like built to last by Jim Collins.

Enjoy the Journey
Finally, it’s crucial to recognize that the journey itself is a reward. Enjoy it, from the learning, the growth, and the person you’re slowly becoming in the process. This mindset not only fuels your belief in your work but also enriches your life, making the journey as rewarding as the destination.
At the end of the day many of these experiences and stories are passed down for us to learn and emulate. Get yourself in the stories of those who’ve successfully navigated the path you’re on. Learn from their successes and failures will provide you with perspective, inspiration, and practical strategies for overcoming challenges. BE PATIENT! The journey is often longer and more complex than we expect. Patience allows you to endure the slow periods and to continue investing in your growth.
And remember exercise your unwavering belief (madness) with caution!
